A lot of fiction has been written about Virtual Reality MMORPGs. Most recently, the book and film Ready Player One was a smash hit. However, not much has been written about Augmented Reality (AR) MMO games but some developers had MMORPGs in mind when they create games.
The Walking Dead: Our World, a mobile Augmented Reality game ala Pokemon Go, was designed to be a zombie-themed MMORPG built on top of real-world locations.
“Building an MMO game with the real world as your setting is an enormous challenge, fraught with a number of difficulties, one of the most pressing being the sheer diversity of areas the game would have to account for,” wrote Alan Bradley, Gamasutra.
The concept of the game is simple if you are familiar with augmented reality games: players fight off hordes of zombies by walking around in the real world. Avatars move when the players physically moves hir or her body in the real world.
However, the game has been criticized for its “timegating” since players in the game are limited in the amount of time they can play before being forced to stop and wait for their in-game energy to refill though players can opt to pay (real world, not in-game) cash for more energy.
In addition, there seems to be some bugs that need to be worked out. For example, here is an ad that covers the game screen, posted by an annoyed player on Reddit:
The game is available on mobile and the official website is at: https://www.thewalkingdeadourworld.com/
